Health information from the NHS

You may get symptoms straight after eating a food you're allergic to, or days later. Most symptoms are not serious, but a reaction can be serious for some people.

Common symptoms include:

  • itchy skin or a raised rash (hives)
  • swelling of the lips, face and eyes
  • coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, noisy breathing or a hoarse voice
  • feeling sick or being sick, tummy pain or diarrhoea
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded

If you have an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) or nasal spray and are having a serious reaction, use it immediately, then call 999, even if you feel better.

If you're lactose intolerant, symptoms such as tummy pain, bloating and diarrhoea can start a few minutes or a few hours after having lactose. This is different from a milk allergy.

Call 999 if:

  • your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen
  • you're breathing very fast or struggling to breathe
  • your throat feels tight or you're struggling to swallow
  • your skin, tongue or lips turn blue, grey or pale
  • you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy
  • someone faints and cannot be woken up, or a child is limp, floppy or not responding as usual
