Health information from the NHS
You may get symptoms straight after eating a food you're allergic to, or days later. Most symptoms are not serious, but a reaction can be serious for some people.
Common symptoms include:
- itchy skin or a raised rash (hives)
- swelling of the lips, face and eyes
- coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, noisy breathing or a hoarse voice
- feeling sick or being sick, tummy pain or diarrhoea
- feeling dizzy or lightheaded
If you have an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) or nasal spray and are having a serious reaction, use it immediately, then call 999, even if you feel better.
If you have coeliac disease, eating gluten can trigger gut symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach aches, bloating and indigestion.
Call 999 if:
- your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen
- you're breathing very fast or struggling to breathe
- your throat feels tight or you're struggling to swallow
- your skin, tongue or lips turn blue, grey or pale
- you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy
- someone faints and cannot be woken up, or a child is limp, floppy or not responding as usual
